🎓 Why My Classes Work

Learning Dutch at A2 level isn’t just about filling in the gaps — it’s about becoming truly comfortable using the language in real, meaningful situations. These conversation classes are designed to help you speak more fluently, understand nuances, and express yourself confidently in Dutch.

This isn’t a generic textbook course. Each semester, the classes are thoughtfully built around you — your input, your challenges, and your goals. Every week, we dive into rich conversation topics, cultural insights, and grammar points that are relevant to your level and real life.

You’ll expand your vocabulary, correct common mistakes, and train your brain to think in Dutch — all while talking about themes that matter to you.

You’ll learn, for example, how to:

☕ Have natural conversations at cafés, shops, and public places — and actually enjoy them

💬 Share opinions, talk about your work, the news, and ask deeper questions

📅 Make and change plans, talk about past and future events with the correct tenses

🇳🇱 Understand Dutch culture, humor, and habits — and how they affect language use

🧠 Learn techniques for remembering words and correcting ingrained mistakes

Hoi, ik ben Joyce!

Hi! I’m Joyce, founder of Dutch with Joyce. I’ve helped hundreds of internationals learn Dutch – not just passively, but actively speak it.

I’m known for making language learning feel personal, practical, and positive. As someone who loves structure and storytelling, I turn grammar into something you’ll actually remember.

Aside from teaching, I am a registered life coach. I don’t only help you learn Dutch, I also help you to get there mentally, learn better and maintain a positive, supportive mindset throughout. I also have learned 8 languages myself, so I know through and through what works and what doesn’t, which helps you to speak Dutch better and quicker!

Am I A2+ level?

Not sure if you’re A2 level? Take my quick Dutch level quiz! It provides a broad baseline to determine where you’re at in your learning journey. Keep in mind, this quiz is a general guide and doesn’t assess your speaking abilities.

You’re A2 Level if…

1. Speaking and Conversation:

  • Can hold simple conversations: You can have basic conversations about familiar topics such as your daily routine, family, work, hobbies, and interests.
  • Can ask and answer simple questions: You are able to ask for information (like directions, prices, etc.) and respond appropriately in simple conversations.
  • Can express personal opinions or preferences: You can talk about what you like or dislike and express simple opinions.

2. Listening:

  • Can understand basic spoken language: You can follow simple conversations, announcements, or instructions if they are spoken slowly and clearly.
  • Can catch the main idea of familiar topics: You understand the general idea of audio or video content (like podcasts, news, or conversations) related to everyday situations.

3. Reading:

  • Can read simple texts and emails: You can understand short, straightforward texts such as advertisements, simple emails, or notes, especially when the language is familiar.
  • Can understand key information: You can easily extract basic information from brochures, menus, or instructions.

4. Writing:

  • Can write simple sentences and paragraphs: You can write short, simple messages, emails, and postcards with basic grammar and vocabulary.
  • Can describe experiences or events: You can write about your daily life, past experiences, and future plans in simple sentences.

5. Grammar and Vocabulary:

  • Can use common grammatical structures with some mistakes: You understand and use basic tenses (present, past, and future) and sentence structures, but might make some mistakes when trying more complex structures.
  • Has a functional vocabulary: You know a wide range of basic vocabulary for everyday life, but might struggle with more specialized or abstract terms.

6. Confidence and Fluency:

  • Can engage in basic conversations, but might struggle with speed or fluency: You can understand and participate in conversations on familiar topics, but may pause or ask for clarification.
  • Can express yourself with some hesitation but generally understood: You may hesitate or search for words, but people can understand you in a simple conversation.

Key Signs of Reaching A2 Level:

    • You can engage in basic conversations and express yourself with ease in familiar situations.
    • You can understand more than just isolated phrases and can handle simple interactions in Dutch.
    • You can navigate daily life (ordering food, asking for directions, etc.) in Dutch, though still with occasional difficulty.

As seen in:

"To be able to successfully hold conversations in The Netherlands without it breaking into English. I am definitely able to say now that I can "speak Dutch". This was my goal and it is the foothold I needed before moving."
